Newgarden boosts title hopes with Sonoma pole

– Josef Newgarden delivered yet another strong message to the IndyCar field on Saturday, breaking the track record, winning pole position and picking up a crucial championship point at Sonoma.The American had been quick through all of the practice sessions and had led his group in Q1, but a final lap dash on used red tyres guaranteed that his championship lead will stretch to four when the cars line up on the grid tomorrow.Seven men were mathematically eligible for the title at the GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma, but only five have realistic opportunities.
