Carpenter leads ECR 1-2, Sato and Hinchcliffe crash
Ed Carpenter and Josef Newgarden rocketed to the top of the time sheets late in first practice at Phoenix International Raceway, as Takuma Sato and James Hinchcliffe hit the wall. Carpenter set his 192.400mph lap (19.1227sec) on the 18th of his 22 laps, while his Ed Carpenter Racing-Chevrolet teammate Newgarden needed just nine laps to go second. Helio Castroneves made it three 192-mph laps with P3 in his Team Penske-Chevy, while Tony Kanaan was fourth in the #10 Ganassi-Chevy. Penske and Ganassi entries filled out the remainder of the top 10, giving Chevrolet a top-10 sweep, which made Max Chilton the best of the rookies in the #8 Ganassi car.
