Alonso - Pole 'close' without engine issue

Fernando Alonso believes he would have been close to pole position for his first Indy 500 but for an engine problem during his qualifying run. An engine concern after practice on Sunday saw Honda make a last-minute decision to change Alonso's engine, managing to do so in less than two hours to ensure the car could go through technical checks before Fast Nine qualifying. Once out on track, Alonso secured fifth place with an average of 231.300 mph, but the Spaniard believes it was possible to challenge Scott Dixon's speed of 232.164.
