Helio Castroneves pips Scott Dixon to Long Beach pole

Helio Castroneves has secured pole position for the IndyCar Grand Prix of Long Beach, after an eventful qualifying session for the 80-lap race. The Penske racer will be joined on the front row of the grid by reigning champion Scott Dixon, who initially ended the second segment fastest after a timing issue plagued proceedings. During the second segment of the qualifying session it became apparent that the live timing system had failed, with various glitches appearing up and down the order.  Eventually the issue was rectified, with confusion on pit road as to who had progressed into the all-important Firestone Fast Six.
