IndyCar: Newgarden earns first IndyCar pole

Josef Newgarden’s domination of the weekend at Milwaukee Mile continued this afternoon and it was enough to earn him first pole in the Verizon IndyCar Series. The CFH Racing-Chevrolet driver was the only driver to hit 170mph on his first of two flying laps, and when he backed it up with a 169.823, he put himself out of reach of the strong contenders. Schmidt Peterson Motorsport-Honda found pace at exactly the right time, Ryan Briscoe and James Jakes qualifying second and fifth, with Briscoe being the only driver capable of joining Newgarden in the 170mph-average club.
