IndyCar: Power takes pole for Detroit Race 1
Will Power claimed his 39th Indy car pole position with a 1min16.0941sec lap of the 2.35-mile Belle Isle track, edging a late run by last year’s polesitter and Penske-Chevrolet teammate Helio Castroneves by just 0.0295sec. It was the Australian’s third pole of the season and gave him an extra point as he attempts to close down the championship lead of Indy 500 winner Juan Montoya who finished the session in third, 0.35sec behind. Perhaps the most startling result of the day was Takuma Sato preventing a Penske 1-2-3-4 by beating Simon Pagenaud to fourth spot with the quickest of the Honda-powered cars.
